Rochdale Sixth Form College using shared services to provide ICT to students

Capita IT Services to provide managed ICT service using Rochdale Building Schools for the Future (BSF) infrastructure

28/06/2010

Capita IT Services today announces it will be delivering an end-to-end ICT infrastructure and managed ICT service to Rochdale Sixth Form College, in the heart of Rochdale town centre. The contract, worth £1.5 million, will run for five years initially. The service will be delivered by utilising the shared infrastructure which forms part of the Rochdale BSF programme.

Rochdale Sixth Form College is the newest college in the UK; it is opening its doors for the first time in September and it will be the only college in the area dedicated to offering full time AS and A2 level courses. This is believed to be the first managed service delivered to a sixth form college as part of a BSF programme.

The new ICT infrastructure and managed service has been designed to support students and teachers to improve academic results, while delivering efficiency savings by integrating the college’s core activities and processes. The Capita UNIT-e student records system will enable the College to efficiently utilise data to drive quality, student retention, achievement and success rates.

Julian Appleyard, the principal at Rochdale Sixth Form College, commented: “Delivering and maintaining an excellent ICT infrastructure is a challenge for any college. It was an obvious choice to join the BSF infrastructure and take advantage of the wide range of expertise Capita can offer across all the latest technologies housed within the College. Finalising the contract was a complex process, but with the expert help provided by our ICT consultants, HHES and Capita, we are now the first college in the country to take advantage of BSF shared resources and benefit from cost savings over the lifetime of the contract, which will directly support our students. As a college we are confident that entering the BSF programme will prove to have been well worth the effort.”

The Capita IT Services’ end-to-end managed service includes a full time on site technician and access to technical specialists. This will remove the day to day management of ICT and allow the college and its staff to focus on their core purpose – helping students to reach their full academic potential.

Capita IT Services will provide the college with a range of services including anytime/anywhere access to teaching and learning materials, a safe campus environment for students and staff (via the Access Control System), a secure online environment where students and staff can work both independently and collaboratively and the UNIT-e MIS system which will deliver improved monitoring and management of student attainment.

Included as part of the college’s investment, Capita IT Services will also be providing a range of devices, including PCs, handheld devices and Macs, all of which have been chosen specifically to improve and enhance the teaching and learning experience.

Lee Hewett, managing director at Capita IT Services, commented: “This is an exciting time for Rochdale Sixth Form College and the ICT infrastructure we have developed is designed to help them achieve the goals they have set – to be the college of choice for the young people of Rochdale wishing to pursue AS and A2 level courses.”
